Background of the Study

ICU nurses experience high levels of stress and emotional strain due to the intense nature of their work, which involves caring for critically ill and dying patients. Burnout, characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment, is prevalent among ICU nurses. Job satisfaction, on the other hand, is influenced by factors such as work environment, workload, pay, and career development. In Bauchi State hospitals, where healthcare challenges may compound these issues, understanding the relationship between burnout and job satisfaction among ICU nurses is crucial for improving nurse retention and patient care.

Statement of the Problem

Burnout and low job satisfaction among ICU nurses are critical concerns that affect both the well-being of the nurses and the quality of patient care. The high patient-to-nurse ratio, emotional toll of critical care, and inadequate support systems contribute to burnout. Furthermore, poor job satisfaction can lead to higher turnover rates, which impacts the continuity of care in ICUs. Understanding the extent of burnout and job satisfaction among ICU nurses in Bauchi State hospitals will provide insights into strategies that can improve nurse well-being and patient outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To investigate the levels of burnout among ICU nurses in Bauchi State hospitals.

  2. To assess the job satisfaction levels of ICU nurses in Bauchi State hospitals.

  3. To explore the relationship between burnout and job satisfaction among ICU nurses and identify factors that influence these outcomes.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of burnout among ICU nurses in Bauchi State hospitals?

  2. How satisfied are ICU nurses with their job in Bauchi State hospitals?

  3. What factors contribute to burnout and job satisfaction among ICU nurses in Bauchi State hospitals?

Research Hypotheses

  1. ICU nurses in Bauchi State hospitals experience significant levels of burnout.

  2. Job satisfaction among ICU nurses in Bauchi State hospitals is low due to factors such as work environment, workload, and inadequate support.

  3. There is an inverse relationship between burnout and job satisfaction among ICU nurses.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on ICU nurses in Bauchi State hospitals. Limitations may include challenges in obtaining a representative sample due to variations in hospital settings and nurse turnover.
